Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team was called to assist a 76-year-old walker who had become unwell whilst descending from Mynydd Moel after completing a circuit of Cadair Idris. The casualty was found exhausted, dehydrated and suffering the effects of prolonged exertion, having eaten very little during the previous 24 hours.
A hasty party carried out an assessment and treatment, including rehydration, nutrition and cooling measures. Following a period of recovery, the casualty improved sufficiently to be assisted on foot back to Minffordd Car Park.
While responding to the first incident, team members identified a second walker who was also suffering the effects of the heat. Initially appearing able to continue, his condition later deteriorated significantly, with signs of heat-related illness and confusion. Despite prolonged treatment and active cooling, his condition failed to improve, and a Coastguard Rescue Helicopter was requested.
The casualty was stretchered to a suitable extraction site, airlifted from the mountain and flown to Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
