At 8:55pm on Saturday 3 October, Aberdyfi Search & Rescue Team was called to assist a group of six walkers who had become lost and benighted on Cadair Idris. With darkness falling and limited information available, a large-scale search operation was launched.
Information from other walkers, vehicle enquiries and local knowledge helped narrow the search area, but the breakthrough came when family members received an emergency SOS notification from one of the group’s mobile phones. This information enabled search managers to focus resources on the Cambrian Way between Mynydd Moel and Gau Graig.
Shortly after midnight, team members located all six casualties. The group was cold, poorly equipped for the conditions and showing early signs of hypothermia. Additional warm clothing was provided before a walking evacuation was carried out. All six walkers were escorted safely from the mountain and reunited with family members at Minffordd Car Park.
